Principality of Smolensk

Summary

Smolensk remained a minor principality sworn to Kiev until 1125 AD, when the Principality became independent under the Rostaslavichi. Smolensk maintains strong western ties and controls a profitable stretch of the Dvina-Dniepr trade route. Smolensk has thus far been able to play the surrounding powers off of each other, enabling the small state to maintain a large degree of autonomy.
